Specially created by a young Chinese calligrapher at the University of Hong Kong, the Hawk concept is a derivative of the family name of Frank Hawkins, founder of Hawk Associates who spent a number of years in Asia as a foreign correspondent and who has lived in Hong Kong.
In Chinese culture, the process of drawing characters of the alphabet with brush and ink is a highly respected art form known as calligraphy. Traditionally, before pens were invented, Chinese characters were drawn with brush strokes and from that the discipline of calligraphy evolved. Today, some of Chinese best known and most beloved artists are calligraphers. And for many Chinese, calligraphy is an exceedingly popular hobby.
There are an estimated 2,000 characters in the Chinese alphabet of which about 500 are used in daily life and literature. For the Chinese this is complicated by the fact that there can be up to 200 different ways to write or draw a single character. These characters represent words and ideas as opposed to our alphabet in which letters represent sounds. Chinese characters are divided into six basic groups. Our logo comes from the group in which characters have been created from simplified drawings of objects.
In this example of calligraphy, imagine the physical form of a hawk – the longest stroke is the feathers of the wings. The mark at the bottom of the character symbolizes the talons of the hawk. In some forms of the character, this mark is represented by four dots.
